The soft outlines of the Hopper references seem to coincide with the China Town pics. I like the painterly yet realistic look. Though I do think it's worth playing with the selective color approach. Using Rudolf Shindler as a basis for your character design is great. Keeping him more middle aged than elderly keeps him from becoming too pathetic.
